In a one of its kind event, a woman hailing from a small village called Ramanpura in Katni district of MP reportedly beat up her husband for not demanding enough dowry. The matter came to notice only after a month when her husband could not take it anymore and narrated the entire story to the local police.
The woman who is reported to belong to an orthodox school of thinking grew up believing dowry as an essential part of marriage. However, she was married off to a man who had much progressive outlook towards matrimony and who did not seek any monetary benefits in exchange for marriage. After much convincing, the man agreed to demand a small amount as a token for dowry only to keep the tradition alive and only to make his bride happy. But it was not enough for the woman who considered it as a bad omen.
On refusing to demand more dowry, the woman lost her cool and beat up her newly wedded husband. This case of domestic violence continued silently for months with neighbours turning a deaf ear to the man’s screams.
“She used to beat him up at night before sleeping and in the morning after waking up. She kept repeating ‘Bol apne ghar vaalon ki dahej maange varna main tujh par ghaaslet daal kar tujhe jala dungi!’,” said a neighbour who was witness to it all.
Amidst violent protests by the villagers and human rights activists, the police acted swiftly and took the situation in control by arresting the husband & filing a case against him.
“A woman can never be wrong. In all cases of dowry, women have the power to get their husband and in-laws arrested instantly. So we have arrested her husband until further interrogation,” the police said.
