The Supreme Court of India refused to impose a blanket ban on firecrackers and instead directed that only green firecrackers, which are less polluting, would be sold across the country this year. The decision was taken to curb increasing levels of pollution. The court in its order stated that Diwali firecrackers would be allowed only between 8 PM to 10 PM whereas for Christmas and New Year timings shall be between 11:45 pm to 12:30 am.

Soon after the news broke, Mumbai Police arrested a man with a time bomb, which was set to go off at 6 PM. The cops nabbed the man from Dadar railway station, which happens to be India’s most crowded station. After nabbing the man, Mumbai Police requested the bomber to adhere to the SC guidelines and asked him to change the detonation time of the bomb from 6 PM to 8 PM, which the man happily obliged. He was then set free.

The Apex court has also ordered a blackout of Republic TV on the Diwali so as to limit additional sound pollution to a certain extent. Although the SC’s intention behind setting the time restraints of bursting firecrackers was to control pollution, TMC workers were seen calling it as a conspiracy to take snatch away their jobs.

The Supreme Court plans to continue interfering with the life of common citizens. If sources are to be trusted, after observing the hardships of the Muslim community, the court is likely to introduce a regulation for self-flagellation during Muharram processions. The participants shall be permitted to hit themselves with fur-lined knives, chains & belts only.
