IIMs have made a major change in their curriculum for the upcoming batches of management students. Dahi Handi, a sporting event in which the participants form a human pyramid to break an earthen pot, will now be used to explain the successful work culture in the corporate world.
“In Dahi Handi, the participants mutually agree to take their positions and one of them reaches the top by stepping on others to break the pot. Even though the game involves immaculate team effort, the one who breaks the pot gets the maximum credit for the achievement. In synonymity, the dahi handi event portrays the work culture at any private company” said one of the core committee members responsible for revising the curriculum.
It’s not the only festival that has been included in management studies. Bakri Eid has also been included as a citational example for situations where pupils are taught to find a scapegoat to save their own ass whenever trouble crops up and the top management notices. Including Bakri Eid along with Dahi Handi in the management programme was important not only to make students aware of the realities but also to maintain the secular fabric of the IIMs’ curriculum.
