BMC Workers To Lie Down On Manholes To Prevent People From Falling In Them

The weather officials at the Indian Metrological Department (IMD) have predicted the arrival of the Mumbai monsoons by the second week of June. With this prediction, all eyes are now on BMC, The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation.
Failing to cover more than 1500 manholes across the city, the civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has now devised a new method to prevent people from falling in these manholes. Reportedly, BMC has hired 1500 employees on a contract basis, who’ll be deployed at each manhole individually. These employees will track the movement around these manholes and if a pedestrian is spotted walking while looking at his phone and has the possibility of falling in one of these manholes, these full-time employees will themselves lie down on these manholes, this giving the pedestrians a safe path to walk upon.
Speaking to The Fauxy, BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta said “See the annual cost assigned to provide a safety net and cover to these 1500 manholes is 1000 crores and yet the quality of covers we get is despicable. If we hire employees who can lie down on these manholes we aren’t only saving cost but also giving employment to thousands!”
Currently, it is not clear what the BMC’s action plan is in regards to thousands of potholes covering the Mumbai city. An insider informed us that the authorities are planning to make the best out of the situation by harnessing rainwater for environmental concerns.
”There’s a reason why they are called ”pot” holes!” winked a BMC officer.
