A group of Muslims has reportedly denounced a mosque after a survey revealed no evidence of a temple-like structure beneath it.
Before retiring, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud ruled that the Places of Worship Act, 1991, preserves the religious identity of sites as of August 15, 1947, but does not apply to structures already under dispute at that time. This judgment has paved the way for legal archaeological surveys of several contested sites.
Interestingly, many Muslims take pride in the historical fact that numerous mosques were built by Mughal rulers after demolishing Hindu temples. As a result, they have refused to accept mosques that lack such a historical foundation.
Reportedly, some of these individuals have supported demolishing such “unauthentic” mosques so that temples can be built in their place, with the intention of potentially repeating history by later replacing the temples with new religious structures.
