Modi Govt rejects India’s Global Hunger Index ranking, Claims poor ranking due to Navratri Fasting

The Modi government rejected the findings, claiming it was an effort to taint the country’s image and the index suffers from serious methodological issues and is an “erroneous measure” of hunger.

India was ranked 107 out of 121 countries in the Global Hunger Index 2022. However, the Modi Govt has rejected the ranking claiming that it has taken account of recent Navratri and Karwachauth Fasting where a majority of Indians deliberately kept themselves hungry as per their faith.

Reportedly, the government of India has written a letter to Concern Worldwide and Welthungerlife asking them to not consider Navratri and Karwachauth days.

Speaking to The Fauxy, a government official said that the ranking is ridiculous. Even the countries who gets food imported from India have been ranked above. People of Srilanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh are dying due to hunger but they have been ranked above India.
